Billing and Payment

Understanding My Bill
When you get your bill each month, you’ll see a lot of information, including your plan details, monthly summary of charges, due date, itemized list of charges and calculations that go into some of those charges. We pride ourselves on being transparent so that you understand how to read your bill.
Yes! You can view your bill online using your free online account. You can view up to 18 months of your billing and payment history.
Standard residential and small commercial customers should expect to receive their first bill within 4 - 6 weeks of service starting with Gas South.
In Georgia, natural gas providers are required to collect this fee on behalf of your utility company, Atlanta Gas Light (AGL). AGL will apply this charge to help pay for the cost of natural gas storage and maintaining natural gas delivery. The amount included on your bill each month can vary depending on the size of your home and natural gas usage.
This fee covers the cost of maintaining your account, including billing, customer service and general account support. For most residential customers, the amount varies between $6.95 and $9.95, based on your credit and location—qualified seniors get a discounted customer service fee of $4.95. For business customers, the customer service fee varies between $6.95 and $9.99.
Every natural gas provider in the state charges a connection fee when you’re having your natural gas turned on. This is true if it’s being turned on for the first time at your new home or if you’re switching from one provider to another more than once in a year. At Gas South, we charge a one-time connection fee for residential and small business customers ($60 to $75, up to $105 for seasonal customers) that will show up on your first bill. If you switch more than once in a year, the fee is $7.50.
The Interstate Pipeline Charge, which applies only to business customers, is a fee for transportation of natural gas through the interstate pipelines from various gas-producing regions to Georgia. It includes the fixed costs Gas South incurs for the transportation and storage of gas.

There are several possible reasons your bill may be higher than usual.

  1. You used more natural gas this month (usage varies by season)
  2. Atlanta Gas Light's Base Charge varies by month and tends to be higher in the winter months. You’ll see Atlanta Gas Light's Base Charge on each bill monthly as the AGL charges are spread over an entire year rather than when gas is used.
  3. If you’re on a variable rate, the rate changes monthly and fluctuations in the market could drive your bill up or down
  4. If you recently changed from a fixed rate to a variable rate plan, that will affect your bill amount
This occurs when Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) doesn't provide their base charges to Gas South during your meter read cycle. This can happen according to when you started, switched or stopped service. In rare cases, your bill can look like this when AGL provides a second meter reading for additional gas charges after your normal monthly bill was already created. These types of bills include the AGL Meter Read Charge and gas charges but don't include Atlanta Gas Light's Base Charge or a Customer Service Fee.
This occurs when Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) is unable to obtain a meter reading, the meter reading is the same as the previous meter reading or you recently started, switched or stopped service. These bills will include Atlanta Gas Light's Base Charge, a Customer Service Fee and possibly Interstate Pipeline Capacity Charges (for business customers) but will not include the AGL Meter Read portion or Gas Charges.
Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) offers residential rebates and commercial rebates for water heater conversions, heat pump system conversion or a propane furnace conversion. ENERGY STAR also offers discounts on ENERGY STAR-certified products.

Disconnection or Reconnection
If your gas has been shut off, you must request to have your service restored. The steps will depend on how long it’s been since disconnection:
  • Within 10 days of shutoff:
You can restore service by paying your past-due balance plus a reconnection fee (up to $60). Once you’ve paid the past-due balance, we’ll work with Atlanta Gas Light to have service restored as soon as possible, though it depends on the availability of their service techs and could take as long as five business days.
  • After 10 days:
You’ll need to sign up for new service—and this will include a soft credit screening and new terms of service.
For more information, review How to Manage Possible Service Disconnections.
Yes. Ten days after your service has been disconnected for nonpayment, your account may be sent to a third-party collection agency for further action. Any unpaid balances over 30 days old on an inactive account may be sent to a third-party collection agency. You will receive written notification when your account has been sent to a third-party collection agency.
Yes. Once your account is sent to a third-party collection agency, you can make your payment to the collection agency or to Gas South.
